The Honda Accord and Fit repeat as Car and Driver's "10Best Cars" for 2009. Accord has been a "10Best Car" selection 23 of the 27 years the award has been given and the last eleven years in a row. The Fit was picked for a third year in a row. |
How were cars selected for consideration? Last year's winners were automatically included and other all-new or significantly upgraded models for 2009 were also considered. The cars had to have a base price of $71,000 or less and must be on sale by January of 2009. Finally, the manufacturer had to deliver an example for Car and Driver's evaluation.
Entries are rated in three general areas:
Here's what the Car and Driver editors had to say about Accord and Fit.
"Bigger is better from a family point of view, and we're happy to report that the increase in size hasn't diluted the crisp responses and exacting path accuracy that have always made Accords so satisfying to drive." "Another proof [of Accord's ongoing excellence]: 23 10Best trophies in 27 years. Outstanding barely describes this achievement."
"It's essentially a brand-new car – longer wheelbase, a little bigger overall, slightly roomier within, a little more mass, a little more muscle, a little more hustle, with the same fuel economy" "We were impressed with the high-quality appointments and design that distinguished the interior of the first Fit, but the makeover raises both elements of the inner car by a couple of notches. It also improves the usefulness of this amazingly voluminous small car." "The best part is that Honda's updates haven't diluted this car's warrior spirit at all. The Fit won't contort facial muscles at full throttle, but its agility ranks at the top of the econocar charts. If there's a better combination of thrift, practicality, and fun-to-drive, we haven't seen it yet." |
Honda named Insurance Institute for Highway Safety "Top Safety Pick"
Ford (and its Volvo brand) and Honda (and its Acura brand) took home nearly one-third of this year’s Insurance Institute for Highway Safety “Top Safety Pick” awards. The Top Safety Pick awards, which were given out to 72 vehicles this year, are based on scientifically-proven crash worthiness in front, side and rear impacts.
The award is not limited to a certain number of vehicles per class, but rather is given to any vehicle which earns top marks in three separate laboratory collisions. Ford and Volvo combined had 16 award winners and Honda and Acura combined for 13 awards.
Honda, Acura and Subaru also stood out by taking home a Top Safety Pick award in each class in which they offer a vehicle.
Chrysler was the only major manufacturer to not receive a single award, though it did receive runner-up status for the Chrysler Sebring sedan and convertible and Town & Country and the Dodge Avenger and Caravan. According to the IIHS, those vehicles would have been Top Safety Picks had their headrests provided better protection against rear-impact whiplash.
